Phonógrapho | Manuel João Vieira
24 November, 2016 to 7 March, 2017
Starting from the poem Fonógrafo by Camilo Pessanha, Manuel Vieira summons the great themes of the traditional repertoire, revisiting the mythology and sublimating the characters of the fados by Joaquim Cordeiro, Frutuoso França or Joaquim Pimentel.
Simultaneously evoking the repertoire of one of Manuel João Vieira's alter-egos - the Lello Perdido - the artist shatters boundaries between the erudite and the popular, gathering references from literature, mythology or the vernacular, to reorganize them in a proper and constant plastic grammar renovation.
Continuously proposing new ways of looking, understanding and intervening in the world, his ability to review and update the themes of the traditional Fado repertoire of the first decades of the twentieth century, transforms his drawings into an inevitably open and free territory. possible ties of Art History.
