Fados Cativos

The Museu do Fado and DGSP (Direcção-Geral dos Serviços Prisionais) presented, on November 25th 2011, the exhibition “Fados Cativos", a show of works done by inmates under the theme of Fado.

On display at Museu do Fado there were more than 60 works by inmates of prisons in Alcoentre, Beja, Braga, Carregueira, Castelo Branco, Covilhã, Elvas, Faro, Guarda, Izeda, Leiria, Linhó, Montijo, Pacos de Ferreira, Pinheiro Cruz, Santa Cruz do Bispo, Sintra, Tires and Torres Novas. The works are performed with various materials, including recyclables.

“Fados Cativos” follows the signing of a protocol between EGEAC / Fado Museum and DGSP under application to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO). The DGSP launched the challenge in establishments that are under their jurisdiction and the prisoners responded with dozens of pieces inspired by the urban song of Lisbon.
